The people of Noakhali district generally lead a simple life under an agro-based economy. The land is made of alluvial soil. It is a fertile land very suitable for cultivation of paddy, jute, coconut, betel-nut and various cereals. Chowmuhani is the main trade centre of the district. A large number of people are engaged in trade and commerce. Considerable number of young men are working abroad and in many industries and business establishments situated in various parts of the country. 

Tendency of living in town is increasing day-by-day. The rate of literacy is growing fast in the society. Old Noakhali town had been engulfed by the mighty river Meghna. That was a beautiful, quiet and healthy resort for human habitation. It was a culturally rich area. But the mighty Meghna had devastated all the achievements of Noakhali. After destruction of the old Noakhali town, a temporary Head quarter had 

been established at Maijdee bazar. But, it is yet to come to the level of a district town. Water-logging has created many problems in the life of the local people. They can reap only one crop owing to water logging and pass their lives in hardship. Inspite of that, they follow the instruction of religion and pay respect to the saints.
