Feni is a land of laborious people. It is one of the small districts in Bangladesh. It is thickly populated. Owing to shortage of cultivable land the whole population cannot depend on it. For this reason from the British period a considerable number of people have been moving to various countries of the world to earn their bread. Chhagalnaiya upazilla is famous in this respect.  There is a hearsay that the ancient name of this area was 'sagarnaiya' (the navigator) which was ill-named as 'Chhagalnaiya'. Commodore A. Rashid of Pakistan navy was a son of this soil.

Feni stands in the middle position between the capital city Dhaka and commercial city Chittagong. Feni people are engaged in trade and commerce. The people of Sonagazi upazilla are engaged in cultivation. This upazilla is known for betel i.e. 'paan'. Paan is regularly exported to the Middle East. People of the coastal belt of Sonagazi upazilla are also engaged in fishery in large numbers. Some people of the southern area of Feni district are engaged in sweet-meat industry as pure milk is available in abundance in the 'char land' of the upazilla. Thousands of people of Feni district, specially of Sonagazi upazilla, have got employment abroad through 

manpower agencies of Bangladesh, specially Bay Eastern the owner of which is Mr. Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain M.P. No such family will be found in Sonagazi where of at least one member is not provided with a job abroad. The inhabitants of Feni Sadar, Dhaganbhuiya and Companigonj upazillas do not depend on agricultural income alone, but some of them have built up small-scale industries.

Basurhat is a famous commercial centre in this region. A large number of young people of Companigonj upazilla are working abroad. There is a tendency of rapid change in the lifestyle of the people of Feni. Whatever change is there, the people in general are religious-minded.
