Al-haj Abul Kalam Azad, a personality of Lakshmipur district of greater Noakhali, was born on 6 March 1947 at Madhupur village under Raipur Pourasava. His father late Kazi Mahfuzul Haq got his education in Arabic. He was Imam in the thana mosque of Gournadi, Barisal. The mother's name of Mr. Azad is Mrs. Ayesha Kahatun. They are four brothers and three sisters. Al-haj Abul Kalam Azad started his primary education in Kanchanpur Primary School of Raipur. But he completed his primary education from Gournadi Primary School. He passed the Matriculation Examination from Gournadi. Thereafter he passed his Intermediate from T & T College and BA from Motijheel College, Dhaka. 

The grand-father of Mr. Abul Kalam Azad is Kari Saidur Rahman who stood first class first in the Title Examination and was awarded a gold medal.

Thousands of families of Barisal embraced Islam in presence of his grand-father Kari Saidur Rahman. Mr. Azad was one of the student leaders in the mass upsurge of 1969-70. He was a freedom fighter. Mr. Abul Kalam Azad got married in 1972 with Mrs. Ayesha Siddiqua Azad. They have three issues, one daughter and two sons. Taslima Siddiquea, eldest of all, is studying Medical Science. Elder son Hasan Mahamudul Wara and younger son Mehdi Mahmudul Wara are studying Computer Science. All of them are now residing in U S A. Mr. Abul Kalam Azad has built up a reputed business organization, the International Power Engineers. He supports the establishment of export-oriented garments industry by the bank of river Meghna in Lakshmipur. He firmly believes that establishment of

an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) with infra-structure development and arrangement of facilities would definitely encourage the entrepreneurs to setup industries in the EPZ area. He thinks that there is a possibility of Taka One thousand crores of foreign investment here.

Mr. Abul Kalam Azad a widely travelled man. Countries visited by him include Hongkong, Malayasia, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Italy, France, UK, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Ceck Republic, Slovac Republic, Australia, Austria, Canada and USA. He is actively connected with several social organizations. Though a reputed businessman, he takes a keen interest in national politics.
